General Info
Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Situated on the Vltava river in central Bohemia, it is home to approximately 1.2 million people. Nicknames for Prague have included "city of a hundred spires" and "the golden city". Founded at the end of IX century, it became the capital of the Bohemian Kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire. The city flourished during the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV who founded the first university in central, northern and eastern Europe and the New Town (Nové Město, adjacent to Old Town), erected the Charles bridge and rebuilt the Prague Castle. Charles wanted Prague to become one of the most beautiful cities in the world and during his reign the Czech Lands were among the most powerful in Europe. Prague has an epic history. It's inhabitants have experienced a declaration of independence, Nazi control, brain washing communism and capitalist democracy. And that was just the 20th century!
Since 1992, the historic center of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
